Since the first photo of “Death to Yesterday” back in 2010, Jason Dowd has sought out ways to bring his work to life and have it stand out from the rest. He wanted people to experience his work unlike any other artist out there and the path to accomplish that task has been daunting.
How do you take a 2D photograph and bring it to life – without actors or full scale models?
That would all change in 2014. It was a December day right before New Year’s. Jason and his wife were in Disney Land (as most are aware, Disney is a major factor in Jason’s art and he’s a man he looks to for a role model), when killing time they took up the show “Mickey’s Philharmagic”. The show is a 3D production which brings some of the best Disney characters to life – almost so you can touch them.
What makes Disney so phenomenal is how perfect everything is, no detail goes unnoticed. Today however there was a small glitch in the 3D glasses Jason grabbed. He’s very sensitive to 3D as it hurts his eyes and gives him severe headaches, but this show for some odd reason doesn’t do that – but since the glasses didn’t work right it caused those reactions.
To avoid a serious migrane, he took off the glasses which allowed him to see the magic of 3D.
“I knew right then and there, this was the answer I was looking for – obviously video 3D differs from still 3D, so it would just take a little experimenting to master the technique.” – says Jason
By the time he was home, 3 hours passed and he managed to figure out 3D for stills. It was an absolute success. As he played with the images more he realized how he could make a subtle 3D image into one that jumps off the page. It was the illusion of depth.
March of 2015 he debuted his new series to the world at “Art One Gallery” in St. Petersburg during their “Mad Hatters Masquerade Ball”. Over 300 people witnessed the magic of 3D right before their very eyes.
His 3D series is forever different. You won’t see the same two images at any show. The show will not be within a 50 mile radius for 6 months, and you won’t see the images online – you can only see them in person; so if you miss a show you may never see that image again.
